Understanding Ramadan: A Guide to the Holy Month

by faisal khan 10 Mar 2024

What is Ramadan?

The Islamic calendar's ninth month is called Ramadan. For all Muslims, this is a unique month devoted to prayer, fasting, reflection, almsgiving, and fellowship.

Were you aware? Say "Ramadan Kareem" or "Ramadan Mubarak" to wish someone a "generous Ramadan" or a "Happy Ramadan." You can say "Eid Mubarak" on the last day of Ramadan.

When is Ramadan 2024?

Sunday, March 10th, is when Ramadan 2024 starts, and it concludes on Tuesday, April 9th.

Were you aware? A custom that stretches back to the founding of the faith, many Muslims break their fast with dates during Ramadan, providing a pleasant and nourishing beginning to their evening meals.

What are the origins of Ramadan?

The most revered book in Islam, the Quran, depicts Ramadan as a month of instruction for people.

In the second year of the Hijrah in the sixth century, Muslims began to fast. Before this, Muslims believed that fasting was a prerequisite for gaining "taqwa."

In Islam, the idea of "taqwa" aids Muslims in following God's instructions. It can also imply self-control, love for God, and dread of God. This relates to the notion that fasting aids in Christians' sin atonement and cleansing.

Five interesting facts about Ramadan:

  • Youngsters often don't start fasting until they are 14 years old.
  • You are not required to fast if you are elderly, pregnant, travelling, or ill.
  • One of the "Five Pillars of Islam," or the fundamental principles and customs that every Muslim ought to uphold, is the month of Ramadan. Two other pillars are making pilgrimages to Mecca and praying.
  • "Eid al-Fitr" is the festival that marks the end of Ramadan. This is a day for celebrations with family and neighbours, mouthwatering cuisine, and gift-giving.
  • Many Muslims will pay "Zakat al-Fitr" throughout the month of Ramadan. One of the "Five Pillars" of Islam is this one, which mandates that Muslims give up a modest percentage of their money to worthy organizations. Poor individuals can enjoy "Eid al-Fitr," the conclusion of the fast, thanks to this required payment.
