During a recent traffic safety campaign in July, Dubai Police impounded 640 bicycles and e-scooters. Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs, highlighted that many of these vehicles were seized because riders failed to dismount at pedestrian crossings. This reckless behaviour is considered a serious safety hazard.
Critical Safety Rules for Cyclists and E-Scooter Riders
Dismount at Pedestrian Crossings: Riders must dismount and walk their vehicles across pedestrian crossings to avoid endangering themselves and others.
Travel with Traffic Flow: Riding against traffic is dangerous and carries a Dh200 fine. Stick to designated lanes and follow traffic signals.
Avoid High-Speed Roads: Bicycling on roads with speed limits over 60 km/h is illegal and punishable by a Dh300 fine.
Wear Safety Gear: Helmets and reflective jackets are mandatory. Riders must also have bright white front lights and red rear light reflectors, especially near highways.
No Passengers on E-Scooters: Carrying a passenger on an e-scooter incurs a Dh300 fine. Similarly, transporting a passenger on an unequipped bicycle or e-bike results in a Dh200 fine.
